edding gowns have traditionally been the province of satins and silks, and elaborate constructions that offer minimal comfort. But get ready, there
is a new wedding fabric in town-cotton!.
It's true! There is an emerging trend towards
cotton wedding dresses. And why not? Cotton
is the perfect marriage of comfort, elegance
and versatility. Its light weight and breathability
make it the natural fiber that is a natural for
a day in the spotlight. Fresh, functional and
most importantly, fashionable, cotton bridal
options are as distinctive in style and fabric as
the brides who wear them.
For the cost-conscious bride, there are cotton
gowns that offer economy with elegance. Most
of the bridal selections presented on www.simplesilhouettes.com, for example, are under
$700--and, they look fantastic. The designer,
Christina Dalle Pezze, has a "less is more"
philosophy of design. Her gowns clearly are
inspired the iconic styles of Jackie O. and
Audrey Hepburn--perennial favorites for
wedding inspiration. Cotton bridal gowns
and dresses allow the bride to feel as good
as she looks on her special day and, best of
all, the Simple Silhouette collections also
include reasonably-priced and oh-so-wearable
bridesmaids' dresses.
For a few dollars more, the designs of Van Herr (www.vanherr.com) are definitely worth a look. Designer/owner Nanci Van Slyke was one of the first to promote the idea of bridal separates as part of her collection. A slave to details, many of Van Herr's bridal gowns feature a signature blend of silk and cotton, and no gown is released until Van Slyke herself has approved it. See the Van Herr website for a list of local salons that feature these designs.
